Another Shot

Another Shot

1973 • 4 min • Netherlands
A structuralist film in which the filmmakers uses the capabilities of the optical printer. The processing of the image surface emphasizes the materiality of the medium, and turns the medium of film itself into a subject. This film even undermines the essential characteristic of the medium – the sequence of single images that suggests movement – by also showing the filmstrip itself. The cinematic illusion is broken, and at the same time it is shown as film.

Apolinaras

Apolinaras

1973 • 10 min
When Henrikas Šablevičius started filming Lithuanian “oddballs” – a professor, a fortune teller, racers, and many others who fell short of the concept of the “model citizen” – he invented a bizarre new genre of documentary biopic. Characteristic of these portraits is a sense of mocking irony directed not at their subjects (on the contrary, the filmmaker’s affection for them is palpable) but at the “Soviet hero” genre. The subject of this film is Apolinaras, a kindhearted policeman who even outwardly looks very unlike the ideological “guardian of morals.”.
The Irish Tapes

The Irish Tapes

1973 • 50 min
The Irish Tapes is the first major documentary shot on portable 1/2 inch videotape. Directors Irish-Americans John Reilly and Stefan Moore filmed over a three-year period in the early 1970s with the support of the National Association for Irish Freedom, a US group associated with the Official IRA. Originally shown as a three-channel, twelve-monitor video installation, it was later edited for broadcast on television in the US in 1975.

Azoth

Azoth

1973 • 20 min • Japan
This work produces complex flicker patterns by splicing together four types of footage, consisting of shots of the exterior of a factory during the day and at night, in positive and negative versions. Nakai created a masking film with a calculated pattern of black and white frames into which he inserted positive and negative images and made a print out of two separate rolls of film. “Images of an industrial zone in constant operation day and night are utilized with the sense that it encapsulates both the beginning and the end. Scenes shot from morning to evening and then from evening to morning are divided into negative and positive frames, resulting in four types of images that intersect, manipulating the effects of film processing on perception.” (Tsuneo Nakai) Two versions of the film exist: 13:40 mins at 24 fps and 20 mins at 16 fps.

The Meaning of Various News Photos to Ed Henderson

The Meaning of Various News Photos to Ed Henderson

1973 • 15 min
Baldessari introduces eight news photos to Ed Henderson — ranging in subject matter from geese at the zoo to an accidental electrocution — and asks him to identify them. Henderson's associative responses suggest the projection of unconscious desires and fears onto these arbitrary images, which are removed from their original contexts. The implied narratives that emerge from the seemingly random juxtapositions and sequences of photographs give rise to questions of manipulation, inference and meaning.

Hark! Hork!

Hark! Hork!

1973 • 19 min
Taking its title from a scene in James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, in which Finnegan awakens from a dream, Hark! Hork! evokes natural and subconscious landscapes. Infusing the work with Joycean language and imagery, Gillette creates a visual and aural parallel to Joyce's stream-of-consciousness text. Melding abstracted, organic forms with dreamlike, beautifully composed still lifes, he creates a collage of thoughts, gestures and objects that contemplates the sensuality of nature and the fleeting nature of memory. This work reveals a complexity of formal strategy and a sophistication of editing exceptional for its time.
