The Jellyfish

The Jellyfish

1973 • 8 min • United Kingdom
The Jellyfish employs a variety of experimental approaches, combining stop-motion and pixilation techniques, freely mixing black and white photography of beach landscapes, objects and people – along with some drawings – to build a poetic, very textured montage, eliding the real and the surreal, the beautiful and the eerie, the spirited and the deadly. Figures and objects are isolated, linked together only by their presence on a beach, all exposed to direct or indirect threats. The different jellyfish are as much at threat – washing up dead, stranded in the desolate landscape – as they are a threat – appearing suddenly and making people vanish.

DEMOLITION OF A WALL takes six frames of the falling wall from the 1896 Lumiere film and reorders these six frames in all their permutations. With a score for piano that follows a similar pattern the film resembles change ringing, a musical form developed in England in the 17th century where the tuned bells of a church tower are rung in a series of mathematical patterns called "changes". Here, we see 718 additional variations on the original "theme".
Laugh

Laugh

"Duncan Morris is asked to laugh as long as he is able...." Another early videotape made when I was exploring the creative possibilities and affordances of the Sony Portapak, recently introduced into Britain. As an artist and filmmaker, the new medium encouraged spontaneity of execution (for little cost compared to film). The ability to see the results immediately afterwards propelled concepts and ideas towards a completed outcome.

The only video work Kounellis has ever made: His vision, in the small exhibition itinerary, takes place beyond a black curtain, in a small room created inside the exhibition space for visitors to enter one at a time. It is alone that one goes to interrogate the oracle. From a monitor, placed higher than usual, the mask of Apollo appears in its unshakeable immobility. Kounellis holds it in his right hand, while in his left he holds a lit oil lamp. There is the measurable time of the video, the 25 minutes of its physical duration: The historical time exists in which the artist offered himself to the fixed shot of the camera. Lastly, there is perennial time, the incorrupt cycle of the ancient Divinity who has always presided over the manifestation of light and art and of which Kounellis is but one of the infinite epiphanies.
