Usura, Amore E Misericordia

Usura, Amore E Misericordia

1973 • 19 min
The artist comes over and sits down, blindfolds himself. A woman holds onions to her eyes and cries. The artist and the woman, taking turns at the blackboard, write Usura (Usury) and Amore e Misericordia (Love and Mercy). The artist, still blindfolded, moves toward the comer; the woman then plays on the harmonica the words they have written. Hearing the sound, the artist picks up two carafes of water. The second man stands up and rhythmically marches in place. His cadenced steps provide a reference point for the artist, who reaches the chairs, climbs onto them, and tries to pour water over the fish. After descending from the chairs he moves toward the marching man, takes a vial of chloroform from his pocket, inhales it, and passes out. The blindfolded woman on the bed urinates on the mattress and, turning over her hand, writes Canto Sospeso (Suspended Song) on the blackboard. The man continues to march and the child continues to play his note on the accordion.

Stomil

1973 • 2 min
Stomil is a short advertising film of Łódzkie Zakłady Przemysłu Gumowego, the main manufacturer of Wellington boots and other rubber products in the Polish People's Republic. The first dozen or so seconds of the etude are actually an abstract film. Thick liquids of various colors spread on a smooth surface. Over time, the frame is increasingly filled with regular geometric patterns, short shots of machine details, first close-up shots of fragments of shoes, and after a while shots of Wellington boots in full view on a single-color background. At the end of the film, still photographs showing women's legs in Wellington boots are also incorporated into its structure. Finally, we see models wearing autumn coats and colorful Stomil Wellington boots. The closing sequence of the film consists of a pulsating company logo interspersed with shots of legs in Wellington boots. Their image was multiplied by dividing the screen into small squares.

Sincerity I

Sincerity I

1973 • 27 min • United States of America
This, the first completed reel of work-in-progress, draws on autobiographical energies and images which reflect the first 20 years of my living. I have three definitions of the word Sincerity to sustain my working along these lines of thought with this autobiographical material: (1) Ezra Pound's marvelous mistranslation of a Chinese ideogram – Sincerity... the sun's lance coming to rest on the precise spot verbally...(of which I would change, for my purposes, the last word to visually), (2) Robert Creeley's trace-of-the-word for me on the back of a Buffalo restaurant menu Sym-keros... same-growth (Ceres) CREATE... of the same growth, and (3) Hollis Frampton's track-of-it to 'the greek', viz – 'a glazed pot (i. e. one which will hold water).' This film might best be seen, then, as a graph of light equivalent to autobiographical thought process.

The work is inspired by the surrealist René Magritte's unsettling painting La Legende doree, depicting French baguettes flitting in a window frame. Woody and Steina used a three-camera construction and through the use of horizontal deflection created objects migrating through a landscape. Maureen Turim called this work "a meta-discourse on painting and video".

This experimental animated short takes a critical look at consumerism in a material world. Thousands of cut-out ads are presented in increasingly fragmented, rapid succession. The film's disorienting and hectic pace seeks to interrogate the extent to which seductive advertising is a shockingly strong force in shaping our desires, needs, and lives in contemporary capitalism.
