Ginger Baker: In Africa

Ginger Baker: In Africa

1973 • 53 min • United Kingdom
In November 1971, Ginger Baker, the legendary drummer of Cream and Blind Faith, decided to set up a recording studio in Lagos, then the capital of Nigeria. Baker was one of the first rock musicians to realize the potential of African music. He also decided that it would be a rewarding musical experience to travel to Nigeria over land across the Sahara desert - a journey that would lead him into a number of adventures. This film by Tony Palmer follows Ginger Baker's odyssey as he makes his journey and finally arrives in Nigeria to set up his studio, which would run successfully through the seventies as a facility for both local and western musicians (Paul McCartney's Wings recorded "Band On The Run" there).

Frieze: An Underground Film

Frieze: An Underground Film

The short is a blunt piss-take on the work of their peers in the experimental, co-operative Melbourne and Sydney production scenes of the 1970s. Miller, appearing onscreen, critiques the film in progress – an essayistic meditation on ‘hot and cold’ (or so Kennedy facetiously claims in voiceover).

Kenyatta

Kenyatta

1973 • 52 min • United Kingdom
Jomo Kenyatta's death in 1978 brought to an end a political career that encompassed more than 50 years of African history. Kenyatta entered politics in the mid-1920s and then spent 17 years in exile in Europe. He returned to Kenya in 1946, and was elected president of the nationalist movement, the Kenya African Union. Arrested and imprisoned in 1952 for allegedly leading 'Mau Mau', he was released in 1961 and two years later became Kenya's first Prime Minister. In power, the man whom European settlers had once reviled as "the leader to darkness and death" was eulogized by them as a pillar of stability, while former allies challenged him by creating a left-leaning political opposition. Kenyatta weaves archival and contemporary images with interviews with friends and relatives, comrades and opponents, to create a biographical portrait of a key figure in 20th century politics, and a case study of what Frantz Fanon called the pitfalls of nationalism as a political force in Africa.

Begegnung mit Gojko

Begegnung mit Gojko

1973 • 23 min • East Germany, Germany
Documentary about the "chief Indian" of DEFA, the actor Gojko Mitić. The popular actor talks about his life. The camera accompanies him as he goes shopping in Berlin: we get to know a young, dynamic and extremely likeable man. The viewer learns interesting facts about his work at DEFA and Gojko's attitude towards the Indians he portrays in the film. In Romania, the main filming location for "Ulzana", test shots were made which show that Gojko does not allow himself to be doubled and how hard he has to train for it. The film ends with the summer film festival in Schkölen, the subsequent sporting activities and conversations with young pioneers. Afterwards, Gojko barbecues for the children before picking up his guitar to sing with the Young Pioneers around the campfire.
The Artist's Studio: Jean Dubuffet

The Artist's Studio: Jean Dubuffet

1973 • 35 min
In the fall of 1973 we had an opportunity to visit Jean Dubuffet in his studio while he was at work on a detail for his musical theater piece Coucou Bazar. The production, which Dubuffet saw as an animated painting, featured performers in costumes resembling figures in his paintings and sculptures. The piece had a successful premiere at New York's Guggenheim earlier that year, alongside a retrospective of Dubuffet's previous works, and later would open at the Grand Palais under the auspices of the annual Festival d'Automne. Though Dubuffet once suffered a period of doubt surrounding his art, he returned to the practice with an impersonal and primitive touch, becoming more and more influenced by works that had no connection to mainstream art, for which he coined the term ART BRUT.
