George & Needles

George & Needles

1972 • 12 min
In the line-up of great Australian realist films of the '70s, this short student film, nominally a documentary, is the most in-your-face and "gritty" realist film you will see. It's powerful and unforgettable. "It's a ground-breaker, venturing into the dark, slovenly lives of a couple of outsiders", said Nigel Buesst.

Refraction

Refraction

1972 • 4 min
“In “Refraction,’ the camera is set so that the leaves of a large tree fill the frame. Green ordinary leaves which move in their baroque ways under the wind. In a sense it is shocking to put on film such ordinary things, things which could be so easy to dismiss. Yet this undemanding, pleasant image hides something. The image IS of what one hypnotically stares at in forgotten moments, amd from which one wakes, when shapes make themselves up in it. These furtive possibilities confront the delimiting, all-eyes-cinema. The intimate sensation is made to bear on the public circumstances of film, provoking new readings of the moving leaves. As the image presses its quiet offerings on the viewer, a subtle interaction occurs between changes of speed in the camera and wind as they, in different ways, accentuate or diminish the speed of the fluttering leaves."

Moment

Moment

1972 • 23 min • United States of America
In a 2.5 minute sequence, a simple series of ordinary gas station events is seen intermittently through the opening display. This sequence is then divided and rearranged 7 times in reverse order. Each time the divisions are greater in number (smaller in size) until finally the film appears to move smoothly backwards, divided by a single frame. The inspiration for the film as well as the title is derived from information theory where a 'moment' is defined as the shortest duration at which no distinction can be made between units of information. This work is a demonstration and exploration of the line between human information and machine information. It dynamically reveals film's basic unit, the frame.

Le Chant des signes

Le Chant des signes

1972 • 17 min • France
Le Chant des signes by Yves-André Delubac makes an image reappear and multiply from the very word, but with difficulty and after long black shots. This short film, which makes maximum use of the black screen, could pass for an experimental film, but it is not experimental in the sense that we give it. It is a "theoretical and rhetorical work" on the difficult birth of an image that extracts itself from the black. Nothing to do with Kubelka or Frampton. It's a film that comes directly from what one could read in Cinéthique or Cahiers at the time. This appearance of the image is like a Caesarean section from the text.

Second Floor, Basement shows us a hospital where only two floors separate birth and death.
