Pointeuse Et Apres (la)

Pointeuse Et Apres (la)

1972 • 23 min • France
I admit today, I benefited at the time of the shooting of this short film with an experimental character from the complicity of a former classmate, son of the boss of this garment factory. I had interfered by making it seem like I was shooting a document about the manufacturing of overalls. But I was there to illustrate the words of a young worker, daughter of a militant CGT of the railway and activist cégétiste herself. The film includes two parts: the ritual of punching out from the first to the last worker and the jostle of the exit into the bicycle garage. The first part is interspersed with 5 mini-sequences of work symbolizing the sum of 40 weekly hours.
Conges Payes

Conges Payes

1972 • 35 min • France
What were the young people doing during this beautiful summer of 1972? A survey takes us to the side of the working world and its summer topography: Stella-Plage in Pas de Calais for the lucky ones or Aubigny au Bac, near Cambrai, for others... Film very post-soixante-huitard, Congés Payés is also a documentary on a certain way of making activist films. Despite the inherent flaws of this particular genre, in addition to its content, the film had been noticed by ISKRA Films for its aesthetic concerns and its research at the level of writing.

Aparceros

Aparceros

1972 • 28 min • Spain
Maspalomas, in the south of the Gran Canaria island, as well as an international tourist centre, is also an important agricultural centre dedicated to tomatoes. The lands are cultivated by families from all around the island who work not as salaried workers but as sharecroppers (aparceros). These families, during the seven months that the harvest lasts, live in barracks built by the owners in the same land they cultivate. Between tomatoes, the aparceros cultivate other products for their own food and for their animals. Water is scarce and it's really appreciated. At the end of the harvest, the day of San Fernando, the aparceros celebrate in popular festivities, which include cockfighting and lucha canaria. This documentary was recorded in 1972, but couldn't be shown until the year 1977, as the Franco regime's censorship retained its exhibition permit.

Hapax Legomena II: Poetic Justice

Hapax Legomena II: Poetic Justice

1972 • 32 min • United States of America
Poetic Justice presents the viewer with an ordinary domestic scene: a stack of papers, a cup of coffee, and a potted cactus on a table. The sheets of paper compose a script that provides handwritten, frame-by-frame instructions for a film that unfolds only in the mind of the viewer.
Voices

Voices

1972 • 35 min
A nearly 30 minute long conversation in a living room party. Unlike in a regular TV play the jabber conversation can hardly be understood. Sometimes a line or two can be picked up. There's an intermezzo when Schippers alias Jacques Plafond comes to play one of his 'modern' piano pieces, to the disgust of the party's guests, whose chattering in the end isn't far removed from the piano play.

Whitchurch Down (Duration)

Whitchurch Down (Duration)

1972 • 10 min • United Kingdom
This film is the beginning of an examination of the perceptual and conceptual structures which can be dealt with using pure colour sequences in loop forms with pictorial material. In this case the pictorial material is confined to three landscape locations, and the structure is not mathematically rigorous.
Vertical Roll

Vertical Roll

1972 • 20 min
Cast as an “electronic erotic seductress,” the multiple costumes and roles performed by Jonas critically examine the ever-changing, but consistently unequal roles of women. The camera gazes at Jonas, implicating the viewer in the work and further, with her body. Her intentional de-synchronization of the monitor's receiving and transmitting frequencies results in the on-screen image's repeated vertical descent. Creating a sense of fragmentation, the vertical roll relentlessly pounds at the images of the artist as she moves through a series of performed identities. Characterized a "disjunctive self portrait" by the Electronic Arts Intermix, the image content of the work is strongly mediated by the mirror-like function of the camera, scrutinized by the lens and subjected to violence by the vertical roll.

The Last of the Persimmons

1972 • 6 min • United States of America
LAST OF THE PERSIMMONS opens with a black-and-white image of a main inflating helium balloons in the shape of rabbits. Onto this image Mr. O'Neill places two mirror images an old Fleischer-style cartoon elephant comically licking its mouth as if in anticipation of yet another layered image, that of a ripe persimmon. —Manohla Dargis, "In the Studio's Shadow, An Avant-Garde Eye," The New York Times, 11/8/2004

Air!

Air!

1972 • 2 min • Canada
Although only a couple of minutes long, this animated short makes the point that oxygen is the stuff of life whether on land, in the air or water, but that it is becoming scarcer as man-made pollutants crowd it out. This is a film without words in which plants, birds, fish and, finally, man come to the same "breathless" end
Highway Landscape

Highway Landscape

1972 • 7 min • United States of America
The filmmaker describes his work as 'a single take, fixed camera meditation on a dead rabbit on Highway No. 1, outside Iowa City.' As the viewer stares at the almost still-life, the elements of composition come together in sad juxtaposition; the silence of death is set off against the impersonal whizz of passing cars, their momentary appearance in the frame creating almost subliminal flashes of bright metallic color.
