Under the Rainbow

Under the Rainbow

1972 • 10 min • Canada
A little good will goes a long way--between persons, and between nations. That is the lesson to be learned from this animated film. It begins with a confrontation between a man who grows flowers and a technologist who operates computers. A flower pops up in the computer room; a computer tape appears in the garden. Each man destroys the "foreign object." When they come face to face they discover that understanding is better than distrust, respect better than hostility.

Tinsmith, storyteller, and traditional fiddler, John Doherty, travels the hills of Donegal. Here he talks to Sean O'Haughey of the Irish Folklore Commission. John Doherty was born into a very musical travelling family in February 1900 in the Ardara area of Co. Donegal as the youngest of 9 children. The film follows John’s travels and explores the Doherty family’s place in the musical traditions of the countryside. John’s parents were Mickey Mór Doherty and Mary McConnell. Mickey Mór Doherty had a musical inheritance of a couple of generations of both Doherty and Sweeney musicians on his father’s side. Also, Mary McConnell was a sister of Alec and Mickey McConnell, who were very well-known travelling tinsmiths and fiddle players in their day.

Le Grice no longer simply uses the printer as a reflexive mechanism, but utilises the possibilities of colour-shift and permutation of imagery as the film progresses from simplicity to complexity… With the film’s culmination in representational, photographic imagery, one would anticipate a culminating “richness” of image; yet the insistent evidence of splice bars and the loop and repetition of the short piece of found footage and the conflicting superimposition of filtered loops all reiterate the work which is necessary to decipher that cinematic image. - Deke Dusinberre

El mundo de la mujer

El mundo de la mujer

1972 • 16 min • Argentina
Centered on a trade fair of products for women, the work's sarcastic and biting perspective falls on both the men who build that "world" (workers and businessmen) and the women who support them. Through techniques of distancing, mostly of image from sound, the artist developed a poignant reflection on the social debasement of and discrimination against women carried out by products that supposedly exalt and distinguish them.
