Manuela

Manuela

1972 • 3 min
The large translucent screen that dominates the film clearly shows Manuela de Freitas' body holding a candle, or rather a shadow (reflection) of that body and the dominant figure in the film, a variation of reflection, blurring, and shadow. This is a shadow theater for a cinema of reflections, from which other bodies emerge rhythmically, which in turn are reflections of souls. In this black and white, silent film, the bodies are the only materiality, and it is no coincidence that the film—a film about the body and soul of Manuela de Freitas—is titled Manuela.

A very quiet and undramatic film, not particularly didactic. Sound: the first four minutes consists of a fog-horn, used as the basic tone for a chord played on the organ, the rest of the film uses the sound of breakers with a two second pulse and occasional bursts of musical-like sounds.

American Art in the 1960s

American Art in the 1960s

1972 • 57 min
During this critical decade in American life, artists built on the styles of the 1950s. An explosion of artistic energy produced Pop Art, Minimalism, color-field painting, and hard-edged abstraction. Sculptors and painters on both coasts explored new methods and new subject matter. American Art in the Sixties examines the key figures of that decade including Rauschenberg and Johns, two crucial transitional figures between Abstract Expressionism and the sensibilities of the new decade. The art of that time mirrors the optimism and the affluence, and the technology and the vulgarity of those boom years.
