Several short stories in the spirit of classic neorealism of the 60s about people and cities.
Scene One: Take One

Scene One: Take One

1971 • 26 min
Filmed in a remote location at Land's End, San Francisco. The film is constructed around a formal central idea. The scenes are constructed to suggest a number of popular European directors of the period, but these styles morph into a free-for-all of film genres. A quasi-personal voice over dovetails with minimum dialogue scenes. The film winds up being something of an essay, illustrating the major life choices and laid-back values of the hippie-era . The brief appearance of members of the Cockettes (the reigning company of drag queen camp at the time) and a cast happy to discard their clothes when asked adds to the general mayhem.

Drawings/Lines

Drawings/Lines

“In Drawings/Lines, 1971, on top of previously printed film—was he just recycling material or was he deliberately experimenting with a new technique?—Palolo scratched lines directly on the celluloid, imprinting on it a choreography of rhythms and lights. The background images, unified by an overall tone of blue and purple, fluctuate from barely visible to perfectly recognizable, producing a fascinating layered effect with material as diverse as Marlene Dietrich, the Beatles’ yellow submarine, Adolf Hitler, Botticelli’s Venus, and a painting by Magritte.” (Filipa Oliveira)
Decimal Currency: The System

Decimal Currency: The System

1971 • 1 min • United Kingdom
February 15 1971 marked the official date the United Kingdom decimalised from its historic pounds, shillings and pence to the new system of 100 new pence to the pound. Known as Decimalisation, Decimal or simply ‘D’ Day, it ended the centuries old tradition of using 12 pence to the shilling and 20 shillings to the pound. Although work on the new system began in earnest in March 1966, new coins were gradually phased in up to D-day in 1971. In April 1968 the first of the new coins, the five and ten new pence, were introduced with equal value to the old shilling and florin coins respectively. A year later the new 50 pence coin was released, replacing the ten-shilling note. The remaining decimal coins – the one, two and halfpenny coins – were all introduced on 15 February 1971.

Color Film

Color Film

1971 • 2 min • United States of America
Further examining the medium of film itself, Colorfilm is a work Lawder made while trying to make a minimalist, "pure color" film. Using spliced-together strips of colored film leader in white, yellow, blue, red, green, etc., Lawder ran the film through a projector and found the results to be quite boring. While he was running the film, though, he noticed how beautiful the colored strips of film looked as they ran through the projector. So, he turned a camera on the projector and filmed the colored film gorgeously winding its way through the projector's machinery." - Noel Black, Colorado Springs Independent
