The executioner binds a prisoner at the stake. He lights a match and the prisoner spits on it and puts it out. But the fire is lit with the second match. The prisoner puts his hands together and prays for the rain. Rain begins to fall. Falling, falling, falling, and water drowned the convict — good luck, bad luck — they all come quickly.

Consisting basically of home movie footage of family, relatives, and myself during the mid-1940's I have included loops of certain sequences and actions that have attracted me. Invariably people find HOMECALL a very warm film; however, upon closer scrutiny quite another facet is visible. –D. D.
All’s Quiet in Sparkle City

All’s Quiet in Sparkle City

1971 • 14 min
The short film is simple in execution, but the message is disturbing and thought-provoking. The film is filled with low-ground shots of cockroaches crawling around a house, interlaced with voiceovers of ads and commercials for various things. We start off seeing cockroaches as an enemy, a disgusting creature to exterminate. The voiceovers of some science fiction narrative allow the audience to draw such parallels. But then violence against them occurs. We hear news broadcasts of innocent casualties of war. It becomes clear how this becomes a protest. The audience is left wondering, viewing the graveyard of cockroach carcasses, if the fear of the unknown brings out the injustice in ourselves.- Omri Curnutte
The Divine Comprehension

The Divine Comprehension

1971 • 30 min
I planned the Divine Comprehension to be my magnum opus however, although it is complete, I never considered it finished. As in PROOF (and, in part, several other of my films) I dispensed with the narrative, creating sequence and short scenes that capture unexpressed emotions or feelings; an unanswered telephone call, the 1,000 Year Old Chinese Egg, fighting hamsters, a fish head floats by in a pristine stream, all tried together with reoccurring motifs. One such sequence includes the victims of the 1904 Slocum Disaster, the reclaiming of their bodies and the funeral service at their church - which is still stands today - all of which were captured in vintage Edison ‘Newsreel“ footage,.

“This film was made without the use of a motion picture camera. Strips of geometric patterns, moire patterns and various precisely repeated designs were applied to the film stock and solarised. These images were then printed in positive and negative colour through special printing techniques…the pattern overlay combined with strong complimentary colours creates a three dimensional effect.” – Science News.

Nixon Visions

Nixon Visions

1971 • 5 min • Sweden
A film about multi-media artist Kjartan Slettemark’s Nixon Visions, the collective title of his famous pictorial version of president Nixon, made 1971-74. It has its beginning in, among other things, Slettemark’s slogan ‘Opposition Must Pay Off’. The new, coffee-loving Nixon is marketed in a satirical balancing act between humor and seriousness. Slettemark’s advertising campaign is ‘a study of Nixon’s mental health’ in which ‘the face is the mirror of the soul’. (Filmform)

Wedding Ceremony of the Ainus

1971 • 33 min • Japan
The documentary is a record of a marriage ceremony that took place in April 1971 and was performed in accordance with Ainu traditions at the request of the young bride. There were two hurdles to overcome in the realization of the ceremony: first, a group of Ainu had to be convinced, who were against a revival of the tradition. Secondly, there were only a few members of the community who knew the details of the ceremony at all, since most of them had already been celebrating a wedding in their own style for over 80 years.
