... has been used in women's studies classes on rape. Its energy is the energy of protest and of rock music. A woman is dragged and dragged through dirt with increasing violence. As the violence increases, so does the beat and intensity of the harsh, eletronic sound. The audience can identify deeply with the woman's movements and so experience the depth of this violence.–A. Odette Robert

Odette Robert

1971 • 54 min • France
Eustache’s grandmother Odette Robert was a key figure in his life, serving as a substitute mother during much of his childhood (My Little Loves was dedicated to her). In 1971, he recorded an interview with her that went largely unseen until 2003—Eustache never screened the complete film publicly, although a radically truncated version was presented on television. In a string of long, stationary takes, the camera watches over Eustache’s shoulder while he pours countless glasses of whiskey and Odette tells the stories of her life. A number of her themes resonate with those of Eustache’s films: cruelty, male philandering, the Rosière festival of Pessac. Number Zero is a return to origins—of cinema and of the self—and an experiment in narration, both restrained and deeply personal.

Plot

Plot

1971 • 13 min • Greece
Life on a plot of land in Petralona in three seasons of the year. An amusement park is set up in an alana in the fall, the plot is deserted in the winter, and in the spring it serves as a stadium where the school's gymnastics demonstrations take place, which during the Junta become another tool of disorientation from the regime. A composition of moments of life as it flows in one of the then less glittering corners of the capital, where a space acquires its own essence. The passage of time sculpts the character of a piece of land, leaving its marks on it, just as it would on a person. Moments of joy and vitality give way to a rainy melancholy, like mood swings at the change of seasons. Until interest, an external force, dissolves everything during the construction of a building. The end is inexorable and inevitable.
