Shapes

Shapes

'I tried to make a kind of environment in the room where I lived in Kentish Town and to make a film within it. There were pieces of paper and screwed up, transparent gels hanging from the ceiling; it was quite dense in some parts. I wandered through it with a camera and then other parts were filmed on the rooftop at St Martins. I think I was just very much trying to find my way in a whole new area of work. I remember it involved a lot of refilming, which was the part I liked. The process was very fluid, similar to painting. I got quite interested in the specks of dust and dirt on the film and the re-filming gave me a chance to look at that more closely. Probably the thing that attracted me to film was the light ... the kind of floating quality you can get, images suspended in light.'

In Marin County

In Marin County

1970 • 10 min • United States of America
"IN MARIN COUNTY approaches the subject of America's ecological disaster as a comic yet bizarre vision. The tradition of Old MacDonald's farm has long since disappeared and in its place are bulldozer and insect sprays. Our fascination with these mechanized wonders of civilization may well prove to be more lethal than we would have imagined. Peter Hutton has succeeded in making an important statement on ecology and the strange delight Americans take in destroying things." - Whitney Museum of American Art

"D" originates from and proceeds through the interpenetration of unreality and reality. Rochdale College 1970

1970 • 21 min
Rochdale College was an experiment with new ideas and ways of living while being conventionally forced to live within the old, dead civilization and its structures. The results inevitably show confusion and angered disillusionment. The new ideas and ways, never allowed time to evolve and produce positive results, were smothered for the sake of convenience and convention. The film is ultimately a nostalgic reminiscence of the Sixties.

Dimension soleils

Dimension soleils

1970 • 5 min • Canada
There is no need to be a mathematician to appreciate this film which puts in images a part of Fernand Lemay's theory. For this Quebec scientist, it is the segment and not the point that is non-dimensional. From this new approach result dimensions and situations in infinite number that this film reconstitutes into an extraordinary spectacle. At once an artistic work and a mathematical test, Dimension Soleil provides proof that, once again, the beautiful is not foreign to the essential structures of being.
