Films by Bob Branaman

1970 • 25 min • United States of America
Bob Branaman, most known for his painting, has been working with an 8mm camera for years, has produced a dozen films or so, which he rather simply and beautifully refuses to name, all involving multiple super-impositions (all created camera-wise) with much flash frame happening (or what he would, if he created them editing-wise, call extremely rapid cutting) and of a natural Baroque-musical tempo and which created for me a whole new sense of film collage. Better Dead?

Better Dead?

1970 • 19 min • Soviet Union
A documentary concerning the harrowing effects of drugs misuse. An undramatised documentary which shows, without script or actors, the harrowing effects of drugs misuse. Young addicts tell of their experiences and sequences show them injecting drugs. "Talking heads" and "fixing" shots are linked by glimpses of the post-mortem examination conducted on the body of a young female addict. These point the question posed by the title of the film. The film ends on a note of optimism which is conveyed in vision and sound by two young people who have been cured of their addiction. The film endeavours to show the indignity and degradation which drug abuse causes. It does so starkly and honestly. There is no commentary.

Panola

Panola

1970 • 21 min
Panola’s life was a performance. He was always “on the set.” Wino, tree pruner, possible police informant, philosopher, “the most dangerous X that ever was,” “father of eight with one more on the way,” Panola challenged our filmmaking convictions. In no way could we film him independently of the presence of the camera. The conflict between our aesthetic convictions and the reality and authenticity Panola expressed led to few years of confusion, unsuccessful attempts at edits, and ultimately the need to find an outside editor (primarily Michal Goldman).
