UCLA's Ethno-Communications Program's first collective student film had intended to capture the East Los Angeles Chicano Moratorium Against the War in Vietnam, Aug. 29, 1970, but the film turns into a requiem for slain journalist and movement icon, Ruben Salazar. The film shows footage of the march, the brutal police response and resulting chaos interspersed with scenes from the rather callous and superficial inquest. Filmmakers attached to the project have confirmed that the original elements for the film disappeared over 40 years ago.

Espolio

1970 • 6 min • Canada
A BAFTA award nominated animation based on a poem by Earle Birney and a painting by El Greco. The theme concerns the responsibility of the innovator for the thing he makes. In the film, a carpenter builds a cross but is reluctant to become involved in the right or wrong of situations that bring men to die on crosses. His interest is in his own craftsmanship. To illustrate this moral, the filmmaker used light-pen drawings, giving colour and emphasis through optical processes.

Étranges étrangers

Étranges étrangers

1970 • 58 min
Marcel Trillat traveled to the slums of Aubervilliers and Nanterre, to meet immigrants of Portuguese and African origin. Composed of images taken on the spot and testimonies, this film forcefully denounces the policy then followed by France in terms of immigration. On the night of December 31, 1969 to January 1, 1970, five black workers died of asphyxiation in a home in Aubervilliers. In the post-68 context, this drama will experience national repercussions, both politically and in the media. Marcel Trillat and Frédéric Variot then produced Étranges Étrangers, a documentary that candidly shows the slums and hovels of Aubervilliers and Saint-Denis.

Raymond Rohauer Presents "The Sneeze"

Raymond Rohauer Presents "The Sneeze"

1970 • 2 min
Raymond Rohauer, an exhibitor and collector, claimed copyright ownership to every film that entered his collection-- and many that didn't. In 1970, film preservationist David Shepard decided to poke fun by making "RAYMOND ROHAUER presents The Sneeze", a biting parody of Rohauer's extravagant assertions via the use of Edison Studios' 1894 film. Imitating the "Rohauer style" of long descriptive title cards, one including the not-so-unfeasible claim: "Recently, persevering Film Archivist RAYMOND ROHAUER secured the Estate of Thomas A. Edison and so acquired exclusive world rights in perpetuity to all motion picture films produced with sprocket holes". The Sneeze itself takes up eight seconds at the end of the film-- itself broken up by title cards!

Six Loop Paintings

Six Loop Paintings

1970 • 11 min
In SIX LOOP-PAINTINGS, as in SOUNDTRACK, sound and image are hand applied directly on to 16mm clear leader. The image at a given instant is repeated both on the image track and soundtrack, so that the viewer is visualizing the image he is hearing. However, unlike SOUNDTRACK, the images and sounds in SIX LOOP-PAINTINGS are not painted; they are made by cutting to size and pasting acetate self-adhesive patterns (Micotape and Zipatone) directly onto the clear film. Each pattern yields a distinct sound. Patterns of lines yield square wave sounds; patterns of dots yield sine wave sounds; patterns of diamonds yield sawtooth wave sounds, etc. The finer the pattern, the higher pitched the tone. The further spaced the pattern, the deeper the tone.
