Partially Buried Woodshed

Partially Buried Woodshed

1970 • 14 min
Partially Buried Woodshed, one of Smithson's iconic works, was executed at Kent State University in Ohio in January 1970. The piece was created by partially burying an empty shed under mounds of dirt with a backhoe until the shed's roof beam collapsed. The physical structure has long since been degraded by weather, vandalism and neglect; it has "gone back to the land," as the artist expected. However, the infamous Kent State shootings in May of 1970, in which National Guardsmen opened fire on students protesting the Vietnam War, killing four of them, has lent Smithson's entropic monument a peculiar historical resonance as a metaphorical locus of the forces and conflicts of its era.

Congregation

Congregation

1970 • 11 min • Soviet Union
After graduating from art school, Yuriy Zmorovych, who had just turned 23, was hired by the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life, better known as Pirogovo. Today, it is a huge open-air complex located on the outskirts of Kyiv — a valuable place if you are interested in rural huts, ancient churches, mills, and folk art. Zmorovych arrived there when there was absolutely nothing in Pirogovo. He was lucky with his job: he got to go on expeditions to villages, searching for ancient icons, paintings, and household items. And larger-scale items—primarily wooden churches. Workers would come for them, carefully dismantle the buildings piece by piece, transport them to Kyiv, and then restore the structures to their original form. Zmorovych managed to see another side to this process.

1970 • 13 min • Germany
The former DFFB student and filmmaker Max D. Willutzki moved to the Märkisches Viertel (MV) in 1969, a large housing estate built between 1963 and 1974 for 60,000 residents on the outskirts of West Berlin. Together with Christian Ziewer and others, he documented the political neighbourhood work on the estate. The resulting »Basis-Filme« formed the starting point for the later Basis-Film distribution company. This film shows how the Arbeitskreis Mieten und Wohnen (workgroup rents and housing) succeeds in preventing the forced eviction of the working-class Puhle family, who can no longer pay their rent.
