With the support of the New York State Council on the Arts and using rudimentary means, the great formal and thematic diversity of the Young Filmmakers is testimony to their aspirations, frustrations, dreams and pleasures. Creating new links between the underground art of New York and Latin America, they reinvented cinema to the rhythm of the Beatles, Willie Colón, Bob Dylan and Ray Barreto, formulating a particular vision, in the case of Fred Pérez, of pop culture, psychedelia and drug use.

John Baldessari is today known as one of the leading conceptual artists of his generation, using found or appropriated images and exploring the associative power of language. Like many experimental artists Baldessari began his career in the more traditional realm of painting. Rather than merely moving on from these early works, Baldessari decided in 1970 to have them destroyed. In the summer of 1970 all paintings in the artist’s possession dating from the thirteen years 1953–66 were incinerated at a local crematorium. This is the film of that cremation. Colony Kitchen was shot by the Pacific Coast Highway in California. Hiding her camera, Hafif filmed a young man pacing back and forth in a restaurant parking lot. He is joined by a second man who likewise seems to be waiting for something. After a while, a car pulls into the parking lot and a woman gets out. The three talk for a while, then the woman crosses the street. The men get into a parked vehicle and drive off. Toward the end of the film, the camera pans to the right, showing the action along the shoulder of the road and the moving traffic. A little later, the woman, too, returns into the field of view.
