The subtitle of this merry performance is "An Action Text", indicating that the artist's introduction for the vaudeville number was an inflammatory impetus. Export provides precise instructions for the use of a wrapped box of chocolate-covered candy produced by the renowned Viennese company Hofbauer. However, she has not made an advertisement for them and their presentation, but instead, she extols the packqge and confection as a work of art. The Meaning of 1/24 Second is Korea's first experimental film and was filmed in 1969. This 16mm film in color and black and white is composed of hundreds of inconsistent scenes. Taking the basic structure of the film, which consists of 24 frames per second, The Meaning of 1/24 Second expresses the steep reality faced by modern man, and the sense of alienation that comes from uncontrollable speed. The video file that remained only in digital format since it went missing in 2001 was restored to 16mm film for screening for his retrospective exhibition , which has been held at Seoul Museum of Art, Republic of Korea in 2013, thus providing an opportunity to look back on its meaning.

This videotape was originally made in the television studio in Rochester, NY on a 2-inch Quad broadcast tape in 1969 with a grant from the New York State Council of the Arts as part of a program series which was produced and aired by New York State Educational Television. I created a live event in the television studio using an urban classroom of children and my films and videos. The sound was the children’s spontaneous songs mixed with the repeated countdown of a rocket launching; the conversation between the astronauts and Mission Control and U.S. troops engaged in battle in the Vietnam War. This tape is shown as a non-scripted improvisation. The studio environment and the children were bombarded by media.

II/69 Kunsthalle

II/69 Kunsthalle

1969 • 6 min
A silent film portrait of Kunsthalle Basel, the foremost contemporary art institution in the artist's home town. Unlike "A Study of Relationships Between Inner and Outer Space" realized (also in 1969) by David Lamelas, which opens with a presentation of exhibition spaces, infrastructure and employees of Camden Arts Centre to then move into the city of London and its environs, Mutzenbecher's small odyssey remains contained in and limited to observation of the interiors of the Kunsthalle. The camera pans along the moulding profiles, captures corners of rooms and chevrons of parquet, looks up to skylights, passes through doors - in the complete absence of any exhibited artworks, the space is exposed to the point of exhaustion.

Made for Art by Telephone – an exhibition held at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1969. Morris simply dictated instructions for the making of the film. Despite this conceptual origin, it is also an essentially cinematic ‘performance’, exploiting slow motion, tight framing and an implicit analogy between the transparent glass door against which the figure pushes, and the screen or image surface. The repetitions and variations, the use of gesture, weight and force, give the performance a dance-like gravity.

Brebbia’s film shot in his native town is a mix of footage from the historical core of Varese that has to give way shortly to new residential areas and building sites. The major focal points of the camera eye are young people huddled on the main square, Piazza del Podesta. Fleeting details of their facial expressions, held for an extra second before they vanish, focus on musings about lives of the locals in the year 2000.

An incision into the complacent, mass media world, The Late Show is a potent, provocative short film made up of only one long, carefully composed shot. And it does a lot with a little.
