The Girl-Friends

The Girl-Friends

1968 • 28 min
After much satirical banter between the two girls and their university tutors and colleagues, the near to final dinner party scene explodes in an extended homage to Jean-Luc Godard via the daggiest dance number ever committed to film. Jack and the two girls (played by then campus objects of desire Jane Washington and Margaret Harrison) leap up from a series of dinner table pontifications – though we’ve already had a clue about the next event when Kate says, “My idol for this week is going to be that weedy little man in Godard’s film”. Then the music starts. All three eventually dance in an attempted replay of the number in Godard’s movie. Its shot front-on in the manner of Griffith, with the dancers moving towards and back from the stationary camera for almost all of the three minutes of the song, until near the end there is a cut to a medium close-up. Exhilarating. Funny. And remembered down the ages.

The epitome of bourgeois mentality, she insists she is, or at least will be, an artist. She says, all she is responsible for is “art”—though she admits she cannot tell you what it is. Beginning with TV images from Viet Nam being turned off, the film ends with the 13th fragment, TV images of Viet Nam being turned on again. We are bracketed by history, like it or not. (Jon Jost)

Reproductions

Reproductions

1968 • 27 min
Reproductions, for instance, completed in relative speed after the lengthy process of making Rohfilm, explores the aesthetic and perceptual effects of the reproduction of just a single type of image: strips of black and white slide positives from the Heins' vacations in North Africa, Italy, and greece in the early 1960s. To make the film, the Heins cut these numerous small images into little strips which they manipulated by hand on a Movieola viewing machine. While one of them maneuvered the strips (inserted them into the machine and moved them in different directions), the other filmed the projected image as it appeared on the machine's small screen. They described the effect of this process as follows: "While filming the many different little strips (hundreds of them) a rhythm is gradually established: quick and slow changes, pauses, a stronger movement of the pieces and a slow insertion, their sudden appearance.
