Time plays a major role in X-Bilder.
Red & Green

Red & Green

1968 • 15 min • Australia
“By this time we had a Filmmakers' Cinema here in Sydney. I made the film on the spur of the moment...to go over a band. Red and green leader was very cheap—you got it for a cent a foot or something. Scratching and 'injuring' the flat colour of the leader . . . I interspliced it with old 16mm footage, breaking up and creating tension between the shots...you know, a native in Papua New Guinea was shooting an arrow, and just as the arrow leaves, the film cuts back into red and green 'travelling' lines (the scratching on the leader). For quite some time this line is running, then the next minute it stops and you see the arrow actually hitting a target. So it gives the impression the arrow is travelling for a long time, on red leader toward the target. The film was shown with different bands, and each time the film looked different.” (Paul Winkler)

A City of Chicago sponsored film commissioned by Lewis W. Hill for the Department of Urban Renewal. The film attempts to defend the city's redevelopment plan for residential and commercial urban renewal, and explains how relocation officers can assist those who have been recently displaced. As the narrator succinctly states, "we are tearing down what stands in the way of a better city. Some buildings must go simply because the occupy space needed for something else, but for the most part, it's the warn out areas of the city that are making way for the new." Recently displaced home owners are interviewed, expressing their distaste of the urban renewal process. The film explains how the city will help these displaced home owners, by use of a good relocation officer from the Department of Urban Renewal. (Chicago Film Archives)

I shot my first film on 16 millimeter inside the eight-foot mirrored cube “optical sculpture” I had built in 1966, and on exterior locations, as a blissful celebration of the visual tools and techniques I found at my disposal. Bruce Baillie’s Castro Street (1966) confirmed my intuition that making visually defined films was the direction I wanted to pursue.

Naturale Artificiale (La Rosa)

Naturale Artificiale (La Rosa)

1968 • 15 min
The film develops around a series of shots of Gino Marotta's sculptures at the Natural-Artificial exhibition at the Galleria dell'Ariete (Milan, 1968). The images are inserted in a tight montage that alternates natural visions with pure ghosts of shapes-light in motion. The rhythms are marked by the music of Cage. Shapes and colors outline volumes like liquid and bright substances, derived from the intense play of transparencies and overlaps. From a manuscript note preserved in the Marinella Pirelli Archive (Varese), the artist reports: Marotta's sculptures were the pretext I was looking for: they are in methacrylate perspex, transparent and polarizing, with those surfaces made of pure luminous variations: but they were precisely a pretext.

Playing a Note on the Violin While I Walk Around in the Studio

Playing a Note on the Violin While I Walk Around in the Studio

1968 • 10 min • United States of America
In this film record of a studio activity, Nauman set himself the task of walking while playing "two notes [on a violin] very close together so that you could hear the beats in the harmonics." The camera is set centrally in the studio in a stationary position so that when he walks outside of the camera's view at times, only the sounds of the notes and footsteps are heard. Sound and image are out of sync, a situation noticeable only at the end of the film when the sound stops but Nauman continues to pace and play. [Overview Courtesy of Electronic Arts Intermix]

Esperienze in uno spazio non teatrale

1968 • 12 min
Performances by artists in 1968 Rome: Cesare Tacchi, Eliseo Mattiacci, Jannis Kounellis, Aldo Mondino and Nanni Cagnone redefine the boundaries of contemporary art by playing with heterogeneous materials, aluminum wheels, fish, kites, paper planes. The group from via Brunetti performs in piazza del Popolo, reviving the city traffic with by now bizarre means of transport, the velocipede and the tractor, on which, with an Indian scalp on his head, Gino De Dominicis whizzes by, immortalized by the camera before the cult of immortality delivered him to the logic of disappearance.
