Une Oeuvre

Une Oeuvre

1968 • 15 min • France
This film, first titled La poubelle du labo (The Lab Trashcan), and after L'Enfer du cinéma (Cinema's Hell), has been projected for the very first time in September 1968 at the French Cinémathèque. It can be considered as the cinematographic equivalent of Tristan Tzara's method on how to make a dadaist poem by putting words in a bag, and it mostly rises from Isidore Isou's film enthusiasm. The film has been made in fact out of elements of film strips found in the trashcan of a film development laboratory, that have been subsequently taped together bit by bit following the exact order they were originally gathered.

Subway

Subway

1968 • 7 min
Subway is a subterranean passage that lies somewhere between fiction and diary, with literal and psychological overtones from the late ’60s. Framed within a ride on the Harvard/Ashmont Subway Line at rush hour–as the train fills and then empties, moving further from downtown Boston while I direct my 7-year-old nephew, Ben, to stand and look around, sit, get off, watch himself depart, get back on, and walk away–intercut with various scenes from my on-going (Bolex) film diary; seagulls circling, anti-war street demonstration past Playboy Club in downtown Boston, large dogs leaping into saltwater, crowd on escalator, Ben’s image in surveillance camera, twilight through half-built, backlit Coop City under construction…

Amour du Cinéma

Amour du Cinéma

1968 • 12 min • Italy
Defined as an ‘animated medley’ by its maker, the film is an animated photographic tribute to cinema through a gallery of stars from the silent era onward, alternating with more or less disorienting images of various origins. Through the widest range of techniques, recombined according to an associative logic that could evoke the cinema of the dada avant-garde, but also fashion magazines from the past, Amour du Cinéma is undoubtedly a singular film with pop overtones. —Tate Modern
Maria Fotografia

Maria Fotografia

1968 • 12 min • Italy
The film begins with a photo shoot, shown in a sequence of often frontal views and counterviews, in which Michelangelo Pistoletto photographs Maria Pioppi, encouraging her to assume different poses and to interact with various objects. The negatives of the photographs gradually appear over the flow of images. The images once hung on the walls, are subjected to a series of bizarre performative actions by a group of young people, as if at an opening (including the artist Ugo Nespolo and the filmmakers Renato Ferraro and Gioachino Nichot), who then shift into a dance with playful and erotic overtones. Two versions of the film exist, one developed positive and one negative. —Tate Modern

A film about the classics of Lithuanian literature. The director was interested not only in her creative path but also in her fate. He tried to make the film, made entirely of static material, breathe alive without appearing stagnant. In addition, instructional films are a great opportunity to set aside some of the dedicated film for documentaries, and the film limits for Verbs have always been too low.

Mayor Daley called out the cops on the various protestors and hippies attempting to influence the proceedings, and resulting riot remains a stain on the city's reputation. Palazzolo combines footage of the various youth leaders as well as press comments from candidate Hubert Humphrey and Daley to illustrate the divide between the factions.

Zipzibbelip

Zipzibbelip

1968 • 11 min • Germany
A grotesque review of actions performed in vain and those of frustration incarnate: it is about the vain attempt to button up a pair of briefs, the failure of a cavalier, a voyeur, a couple taking part in a dance contest; five fragmentary scenes running backwards and forward, standing upright and on their head, accelerated and recurring in cuts that vary in length. A film about the voyeur in the auditorium, who is made to participate in the frustration, and about the underlying schmaltzy music, he actually shares in. (Jörg Peter Feurich)

A camera-object travelling through landscape records images of static objects/textures apparently moving, all at variable rates, depth cues constantly changing, the illusion problematic doubled, and representation confounded as projection produces the opposite - a travelling landscape. This was my first film and, as with later films and video work, in some way parallels issues I had been working through in my sculpture'. DH.
Dear Little Lightbird

Dear Little Lightbird

1968 • 18 min
This unusual film shows how pain - the death of a child - can become a way of seeing, a spiritual experience, instead of only a woeful experience as we are taught. DEAR LITTLE LIGHTBIRD carries the viewer into the world of the mystical vision, where the eternal beauty, spirituality, and unity of life and death are experienced. Beautifully photographed and deeply moving, it was awarded 'One of the Ten Best', International Cinema Competition, Photographic Society of America.
