Rohfilm

Rohfilm

1968 • 20 min • Germany
One of the most important structural films of the period, Rohfilm demonstrates a radical anti-representational approach, destroying the figurative image and bringing attention back to the ‘raw’ photographic material, particularly its physical form. Resisting a stable reference point, the film is a multi-layered onslaught of blurred impressions, shifting surfaces and grating sounds that activates a form of sensuous viewing. In the making of the film, the Heins employed just about every technique of defamiliarization, including direct intervention on the surface of the film strip, rephotography, remediation, and different kinds of mechanical interruption and destruction. It is a striking example of a truly handmade approach. (Kim Knowles)

"While film always seems to aim for humanism and anthropomorphism, I endeavoured in my film to represent only a language with three dimensional letters." Saga is an extension of the plurality of the means of experimentation used by Jean-François Bory to capture the dynamic inside the text, directly related to the spatialisation of letters theorised by Pierre Garnier. lts corresponding object book masterfully resumes the cinematographic dimension in the progression of the writing and uses a visual narration.

An emerging cosmopolitan city, subjected to the alienating imbalance of an environment convulsed by a complex political and social crisis. Withstanding flashes of neon, reflectors and dazzling directional lights, like a night mirror of the city. An elastic uterus shakes and contracts with interrupted spasms, trying to expel what moves and is submerged inside, deep within. Surprisingly and unexpectedly, this altered thing is released, and an anxious, throbbing and anguished humanoid being emerges hastily." Daniel Gonzalez.
