Mars

Mars

1968 • 49 min • Soviet Union
Like the previous film Luna produced by Klushantsev, the film Mars was created at the intersection of educational science films and science-fiction. It consists of seven pieces, which tell (based on scientific understanding of the 1960s) of the physical conditions on planet Mars, the possibility of life on Mars and what forms it might take, of Martian canals and "seas" of the Red Planet. In addition, the film includes the director's fantasy hypothetical forms of life on mars, and of the exploration and colonization of Mars in the near future.

Blue Movie Madness is indeed a mad flick featuring lots of skin as a truly loverly blue-movie maiden shows a beginner the ropes. Everything here is geared toward laughs, but the essential purpose of skin flicks is never forgotten and the trade secrets exposed along the way are very revealing: "Don’t stab her in the eye with it!" yells the director, who can’t keep himself out of the action. Yes, "getting the part" takes on a new meaning in this one.

"My camera was silent, and so I started to compose wild sound collages for my films from my records with the help of tape, for example with my favorite Callas arias. I even got her to sing with herself that way. I also contrasted Schlager scraps of the Caterina Valente, whom I adore, and Christmas carols with the pictures. I cannot interpret what began then. I am an artist, I work intuitively." - Werner Schroeter

Three sequences are linked together in this short film by Straub; the first sequence is a long tracking shot from a car of prostitutes plying their trade on the night-time streets of Germany; the second is a staged play, cut down to 10 minutes by Straub and photographed in a single take; the final sequence covers the marriage of James and Lilith, and Lilith’s subsequent execution of her pimp, played by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. "The film is a look entirely at Western decadence" - Jean-Marie Straub.
