He leaves the factory life he has always known and goes home to his wife. The Way It Is

The Way It Is

1967 • 56 min
This documentary (first of a five-part series on education) examines the battle to educate at Junior High School 57-a slum school in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant ghetto. In September 1966, New York University's Clinic for Learning, backed by a Ford Foundation grant, began an educational rehabilitation program at the school. The object: to reach apparently unreachable and disinterested students before they become drop-outs. Cameras look in on a seventh grade class, observing new approaches to working with disadvantaged youngsters: challenging students to be more aggressive in their studies; permitting class members to hold arguments pertaining to their lessons; and attempting to establish more personal contact between teachers and students. There are also problems. Discipline is poor among the students, who must be taught to have respect for themselves and for the education they can get.

Single fixed-camera take looking from within darkened room, (camera within a camera) out through fire-escape door into vertical space between rears of downtown N. Y. loft buildings. A potted plant, fallen sheet of white paper, cat rests on the foreground door-ledge. The flow of the image is interrupted, partially and then wholly dissolving into blackness; the picture reemerges, the objects smear, somewhat double, edges break up... and again the serene image scintillatingly looms into view. Focus shifts abruptly between foreground and background planes, creating a strong volume-illusion. The fragile image then shines forth for one last time before dying out.

Crowds

Crowds

1967 • 40 min
Shot in Manhattan over a period of several years, the main theme of “Crowds” is contained in its two sole subtitles: “Crowds besmirch our city streets” and “Certain elements make Crowds visually tolerable.” I tried to capture the grotesque and the beautiful - following people and incidents relentlessly. Some of the highlights of the ‘guided documentary’ include; a 3 foot, elderly and bizarrely dressed hunchback women as she totes a shopping bag of crumbs to fed the swam of pigeons encompassing her, street trash - both human and otherwise, perverts, bums and other assorted eyesores, exquisitely attractive men and women contrasted against filthy degenerates and freaks. Creative cinematography and montage enhances the many scenes and stories I waited for, or stumbled upon, during the several years of filming.

In “jüm-jüm” by Dore 0. and Werner Nekes, a girl swings for 10 minutes in front of a movie screen, on which is painted a phallus (slightly abstract and fairly large) The perspective is such that the girl appears to be swinging into and out of the phallus. It is one who is content to see through the specific event. the work exhausts itself in a trivial aspect, the literary. This is most comfortable for the critic: the literary content of a work is easiest to reproduce in a literary form of criticism.
