Watercolors of One Summer

Watercolors of One Summer

1967 • 51 min • Soviet Union
The story of a young art student who goes to the countryside for a summer internship in watercolor and rents a room in a house by the sea. Conversations with an old housekeeper and meetings with an initially somewhat fussy and naive girl draw one summer in the life of a young man. Whether it's a girl's going to university, meetings with people from a beach village, or an old woman's reminiscences of past times, something about these topics has an enlightening effect on the young man. At the end of summer, a young man's eye and weather view is brighter and wider. It is a lyrical and tender story of the beginning of young love and the life experience of a fading Estonian generation.
Looking for Mushrooms

Looking for Mushrooms

1967 • 3 min • United States of America
During his year in Mexico, Conner hosted psychedelic guru Timothy Leary, who he had met on an earlier visit to New York. Conner and Leary occupied themselves with mushroom hunts in the Mexican countryside. It’s not clear whether their hunts were successful. But Conner’s staccato home-movies of their walks – combined with movies of previous mushroom hunts in San Francisco – became his film Looking for Mushrooms. The film rushes through the rustic landscape of rural Mexico, flitting past houses and through a crumbling graveyard. Not to be confused with Conner's re-edited 1996 version of Looking for Mushroom.

In Motion Vision Bignardi constructs a curious repertoire of animal profiles drawn in colour on paper, alternated with pop icons and a sequence of everyday gestures: from the tying of neckties the film passes to walking nude figures in slow motion, alluding to Muybridge and his chronophotography. —Tate Modern

Hernals

Hernals

1967 • 11 min • Austria
Documentary and pseudo-documentary procedures were filmed simultaneously by two cameras from different viewpoints. The material was then divided into phases of movement. In the montage each phase was doubled. The techniques used in this process vary. Also the sound was doubled, again using different techniques. Two realities, differently perceived according to the conditions of this film, were edited into one synthetic reality, where everything is repeated. This doubling up destroys the postulate: identity of copy and image.
