Color UCLA Student Film, the UCLA Film and Television Archive. "A satire on American war movie trailers, in this case a film on the Vietnam war starring Rock Balls. Bitterly commenting on patriotism vs. humanism in its uninhibited comic style, this film has as its key scene a soldier running through a military graveyard while waving a gigantic American flag"--Creative Film Society 16 mm. film rental & sale catalogue, 1975.

Stillborn

Stillborn

1966 • 14 min • United States of America
Stillborn, also winner of the MPD Student Film award for the best film made by a student enrolled in a college course in cinematography, is an experimental film at times abstract in its execution. It tells the story of a boy and girl who meet out in the middle of nowhere. As he looks upon the young girl's face he imagines what life with her might be like. His imagination runs wild as he thinks of the blissful episodes such as marriage would bring, as well as the entrapment he could suffer. At film's end he makes his decision. Use of the negative image for one sequence is extremely effective.
Once Upon a Prime Time

Once Upon a Prime Time

1966 • 17 min
This short fictional film is a zany spoof of TV content with plenty of violence borrowed from the very source it seeks to parody. Our protagonist is a housewife who has lost her family to the television set. Suddenly, her home is invaded and her life is taken over by characters that seem to spring from the V screen. Initially, she attempts to get the intruders out of her house. But eventually, she begins to see that perhaps a life on TV wouldn’t be so bad after all. Will her distracted husband even notice her departure?

Hoffnung - Fünfmal am Tag

1966 • 30 min • Germany
Electric locomotives in the West, steam locomotives in the East. This report from Bebra uses "observations at a German train station" to illustrate the division of Germany. This was the terminus of the "interzone trains" that carried East German pensioners to visit relatives in the West. While the widening gulf between family members is noticeable, the residents of Bebra have made their peace with the division, not least of all because some of them profit from it financially.

"a study of high-art writhing. Carole Morell writhes as if she were born to writhe in movies; writhes like a movie star among flickering candles and smouldering camera movement. Avocada has a percussive Peruvian soundtrack. It is steeped in blue green shadows. It is incomparable and nutritiously beautiful. It is a film possessed of gilded glamour"

S.F. Trips Festival: An Opening

S.F. Trips Festival: An Opening

1966 • 9 min
Van Meter had three camera rolls of 7242 Ektachrome EFB, which he fully ran through his camera each day of the 3-day Trips Festival. The end result was three 100 ft. rolls of film that each had been triple exposed in-camera, each layer of exposure representing a day of the festival. Aside from just two or three necessary structural edits, Ben spliced the three rolls together essentially unedited. This was then set to a soundtrack that was achieved in roughly the same manner, via triple layering of sound he recorded throughout the festival; He calls the film “a documentary of the Trips Festival from the point of view of a goldfish in the punch bowl.”
Archangel

Archangel

1966 • 9 min
This film presents a series of flickering frames of primary colors to groaning tape manipulations. ‘Though I have worked extensively in various media, from music to poetry to film to performance to multimedia and installation art, there is a single thread that runs through most of my creative work: I am fascinated by the potential of light and sound to produce sheer magic.’ (V. Grauer)

Il lagno

Il lagno

1966 • 11 min
The Lagno is the canal that crosses Naples, collecting its debris to stop even before reaching the sea. Around its dirty waters, the film outlines a cross-section that is anything but oleographic of the Neapolitan capital, immortalized already in the advanced industrial era and still wearing the signs of war and desperate poverty. After a few spoken notes, the sound commentary is entirely inhabited by a ghostly composition.
