Time, Ago!

"Time, forward!" - two orchestral suites by George Sviridov, published for the first time in 1968 (first suite) and in 1977 (second suite). The suites were created on the basis of music for the film "Time, Forward!" By Mikhail Schweitzer (based on the novel of the same name by Valentin Kataev, shot in 1965, released in 1966), dedicated to the construction of the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combine. From the first suite, the most famous part is "Time, forward!". Subsequently, it was used in a number of films, in television and radio programs, documentary films about the first five-year plans, industrialization, and post-war reconstruction. Sergei Oskolkov composed his suite: "Time, back!" The film is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the revolution in Russia.

A boy runs barefoot across a beach into a broken bottle. A woman suffers a panic attack on the street. The mundane life of a fireman is overlaid by the fragmented remnants of a burnt-out house. A deformed man's face fluctuates between broken and unbroken as a traffic accident occurs behind him. Electrical currents run through a boy's burnt legs. Something scurries through multi-coloured woods to the accompaniment of explosions. This is the world of British public information films, remixed and edited to create something new and experimental.

Pillbox

Pillbox tells the story of a couple who are forced to part when the man heads overseas to war. The opening sequence boasts the simple black-and-white aesthetic of early cinema – complete with title cards – but after a barrage of harrowing newsreel footage, the wounded soldier finds himself in a psychedelic fantasyland where he parties with a bejeweled king and his subjects. But after insulting the king, the soldier is blinded, banished and forced to wander through a surreal landscape as he searches for redemption and tries to find his way home.
