The English Lesson

Set ten years in the future, Virgil, an English Language Steward (not teacher) works in a school which achieves 100 hundred per cent success rate. Dressed in a red hooded outfit which suggests his low rank, Virgil has been employed to assist the efficient auto-prof: a computerised English instructor. The machine unleashes utilitarian English classes pitched way below its students' levels in order to guarantee passes and maintain the school's reputation. Virgil becomes taken by a student, Marie, who somehow manages to stir him from the drudgery of his apathetic classroom role. He fails one of the student's test in his class and is ordered by his superiors to amend the score if he wishes to keep his position, taking into account the dwindling jobs market. He is bullied, harassed and intimated into complying with a system that is decayed, corrupted and abusive towards its employees.

The Test of Humanity

A documentary about the German Nazi occupation of the Vinnytsia region from 1941 to 1944, because it was in Vinnytsia in 1943 that the Nazis tried to justify the crimes of the Holocaust by accusing so-called Jewish agents of the NKVD of killing repressed Ukrainians during the Vinnytsia tragedy of 1937–1941. The film is based on the revelation of the age-old wisdom and interethnic tolerance of the Ukrainian people during the terrible years of war, in particular how people ended up in Jewish ghettos and concentration camps, and their Ukrainian compatriots, despite the threat of death, saved their lives.

Rien sur les mocassins

Documentary on Atikamekw craftsmanship that switches to documentary on the challenges of transmission within the community, the preservation of traditional indigenous knowledge and especially its protection from the various assaults of the world. There will be no moccasin movie. This is how the director's grandmother, Eden Awashish, decides to respond to the granddaughter project. The film will therefore speak to us about transmission but without revealing secrets that do not belong to us.

The short was inspired by the Charlotte Room in Toronto, Canada and JP the cheating drunk who couldn't beat the director at pool if his life depended on it. All sound FX were self recorded with an iphone in a pool hall in Tokyo.

Gholam-Hossein Saedi was an acclaimed Iranian author, playwright and screenwriter with an oeuvre that contains more than thirty publications. Freedom And Other Maladies depicts Saedi's restless passion and heartbroken demise based on letters that he wrote over the years as well as interviews with his close friends and associates. The documentary film focuses on the last four years of Saedi's life in Paris, at the peak of his suffering, painfully aware that he would die in exile.

It is all far less complicated than you think, and at the same time much less is possible than you would like to. To be honest, after a while it is mainly boring, the precocious kid explains. But who is he actually talking to all this time?
