Breathin': The Eddy Zheng Story

2016 • 58 min • United States of America
Arrested at 16 and tried as an adult for kidnapping and robbery, Eddy Zheng served over 20 years in California prisons and jails. Ben Wang’s BREATHIN’: THE EDDY ZHENG STORY paints an intimate portrait of Eddy—the prisoner, the immigrant, the son, the activist—on his journey to freedom, rehabilitation and redemption. BREATHIN’ moves with a deep, critical love, unafraid in confronting the hard truths of Eddy’s crime, the harsh realities of mass incarceration and the intertwined emotional hardships experienced by all involved. The film finds Eddy at many crossroads — in and out of parole hearings, organizing in the community, othered and at risk of deportation — his resilience and astounding compassion resounding throughout. In chronicling Eddy’s decades-long struggle for freedom, the film interrogates the complexities and hypocrisies of crime and punishment in the United States, raising the greater question: For whom are prisons for?

Rhodiacéta 2014, a forgotten industrial site at the entrance to a city. Abandoned for almost 30 years, it has become the clandestine theater for generations of taggers, photographers, and other Argonauts who haunt the place. Drawing on his social and activist journey, the film shows and gives voice to what resists in this monumental structure slated for demolition. From yesterday to today, it explores occupation: that of the great strike of 1967 which led to the formation of the Medvedkine group, then, after the closure of the spinning mill in 1981, that of a diverse and clandestine population benefiting from a "free space" there, and finally, that of the walls on which constantly renewed paintings are displayed. We will paint a portrait of this emblematic wasteland, through these “people from the inside”, these people of today but also with those who were close to it, who lived there, who worked there and who, through memory, still live there.

A collage more than a diary using images as artifacts that reflect processes. Sounds often come from other rooms, altered by their distance and the spaces that they have come through, just as the images themselves reflect the history of their own alterations. It is also a humorous exploration of the ideas of vignetting as it frames, highlights, distances and alters space.
