In Sodeoka’s “Exponential Function: 154”, the exponents of old-school graphic arts — think Technicolor circular artifacts, gradient TV static stripes — rapidly unfurl as a moving, quotable history of geometric shapes and colors. Taking Wire’s 154 album cover artwork as an inspiration, the recurring motif of a DNA double helix twist references ranging from the geometric abstraction of Bridget Riley, Josef Albers and Frank Stella to the playful and irreverent British post-punk music packaging of Barney Bubbles and Peter Saville. Ultimately, it's acid flashbacks from a specific pivotal continuum in visual culture, processed through Sodeoka's distinctive feedback complexity.

Notes from Liberia

This film traces the journey of the late Japanese cinematographer Ryo Murakami to the Firestone Tire and Rubber Plantation in Liberia. Under the cover of night, he trespasses onto the plantation grounds and enters a scarcely seen world, where coercive living conditions and labor practices have changed alarmingly little since the plantation opened in 1926. Journalistic access to the plantation is tightly controlled and monitored by the company, and Ryo’s footage is a rare independent vision of the lives of plantation workers.

Honey at the Top is a film about the Sengwer forest people of the Cherangani Hills, Kenya, being evicted from their ancestral land in the name of conservation. The film centres around father of two Elias as he works with his community to try and hold onto their culture and resist the evictions. It is an intimate portrait of this community at a crossroads, facing international pressure from organisations like the World Bank, a corrupt Kenya Forest Service who are burning their houses and attempts to turn the forest into a commodity through carbon offsetting schemes.

The situation is absurd and exhausting.
