The Front Lines of Kurdistan

The Front Lines of Kurdistan is a TV documentary about the modern history of the Kurds, an oppressed and besieged people attempting to create an independent state on the ruins of Middle East. The Kurds are the largest ethnic group without one; Kurdish-inhabited areas reach into Iran, Turkey, Iraq, and Syria. The documentary takes us to the battle lines between Kurdish forces and the Islamic State in Kirkuk and the Sinjar Mountains (Iraq), and Kobani (Syria). In December 2014 and January 2015, Erik Valenčič made it to the front lines of the fierce offensives and interviewed key figures in the struggle for an independent Kurdistan.

Falling Frames

Falling Frames is the first fragment of a series in which Langkamp explores the framing and visualization of three-dimensional perspective through the two-dimensional medium of video, both technically as well as conceptually. To record the work, a special device was built that's attached to a tall industrial crane, which contains a stack of wooden picture frames that can be released from a height of ten to fifteen meters. The camera is placed right in the center of the action and captures the frames' movement while they fall down. The slow motion recording of 240 still frames per second allows us to experience every millimeter of movement to the very detail. While the frames get smaller and smaller in perspective as they move further away from our view, they are immediately followed by the next frame and the next one, until they've all reached the floor and found a place to rest.

German artist Adolf Menzel's unfinished painting Kircheninneres comes to life in a vision of a post-apocalyptic world where modern society is left in ruins and the only way to survive is to dominate. The plot of the film focuses on two gangs of young men fighting over a church that has been transformed into a shelter. The protagonist, a member of one of the gangs, tries to navigate between the desire to survive and his humanity. He seeks to protect the one he loves, he does not want to betray his friends, and therefore he does not withdraw from the fight. When the gangs clash in a brutal battle, the wounded hero is rescued by his beloved at the risk of his own life. The hero's friends win the battle, but instead of joyful bells, the thunder of fighter jets rings out, blending in with the brushstrokes of the unfinished painting. The lovers fail to protect each other from their inevitable fate.
