Drowning on Dry Land

Very few people have seen life from as many angles as Ray Jones. After a regular upbringing in a working-class area of Swansea, Ray veered off the rails into a life of shoplifting and small-time drug dealing fuelled by alcohol and driven by gambling. Inevitably, Ray was sent to prison and eventually left Swansea for London such was his growing notoriety with the police and magistrates in his home town. In London he settled in Ladbroke Grove and became a key figure in the burgeoning music and art scene emerging from the boho pubs around Notting Hill. He toured with Joe Strummer, hung out behind the scenes in Paris fashion houses and ran Dylan's bar in San Francisco before being ripped off in a massive drugs deal, leaving him destitute.

Without knowing where the other person was going, we animated straight ahead without a plan. The film was part of an exhibition we did together at Vienna Museumsquartier - ASIFAKEIL

Three men unite in a community of suffering, with their lives destroyed by reunification. Although from different backgrounds, they join in drowning their sorrows in alcohol. There's no going forward and no going back. A reflection on past, present and future.

For doing this his friends have to organize an ambulance. In the world the characters live this simple action turns to be an impossibly hard task.

My Jewish Death

In 2004 Sheldon Oberman, a Jewish storyteller from Winnipeg, passed away. At his funeral the presiding Rabbi said that Sheldon’s spirit was with the congregants in the sanctuary. For filmmaker Saul Henteleff this was a revelation that began a personal and spiritual journey into the meaning of Jewish death. My Jewish Death is the result of this journey.
