Toby is the night janitor at a museum, and he polishes and cleans all the statues. The latter come to life, of course, and the results can be humorous. I mean, seeing a dinosaur gargle with mouthwash, Rodin's "The Thinker" doing a Russian dance, etc., is pretty wild.Toby has fun brushing a statues' teeth, or clipping the toenails on another, etc. His mop then turns into a harp and he plays music for them. It's typical early '30 imaginative animation with sights you don't often see.The print is so-so but I am just grateful we are still able to see some of these early animated short. Hey, this one is 77 years old, and was made just around the time sound was introduced to movies.

Titles in French and English help us know what we're seeing. In all waters, daphnia abound. They are crustaceans about 2 ml long, with one eye that turns in all directions. Antennae enable daphnia to move: in a close up magnified 150,000 times, we see the muscles of the antennae pulse. We see the eye, the nerve mass, blood globules, and the heart, beating several times per second. The intestine forms a long line. All are females; eggs develop above the intestine. New generations come rapidly. Inside each daphnia are tiny infusoria; we watch them clean the intestine of a dead daphnia. An enemy, the hydra, approaches. A daphnia dies, but many remain.

Proposed by the new Monk Film Festival in Italy, Ebba Jahn took the opportunity to choose one of the suggested music works to make a video with - it is "La scalata" by Nello Toscano who plays the cello here and mixed it with additional man-made sounds.
Someone on the move through "lost places" came to her mind, so she worked with collages by Stefania Buzatu to create this flux of sur-real experience, with images of a surrealism that grew within its existence of 100 years now.
Nello Toscano: In fact, the steps and breathing were recorded during a climb on the crater of Etna and the cello was recorded afterwards. The meaning of the (music) piece is twofold and therefore represents a real climb on the volcano but also the effort to reach a goal that escapes you and, philosophically, 'the existential effort of becoming'.
