Faith and knowledge entwine to flow deep within fisher elder S Palayam, who lives in the fishing village of Urur Olcott Kuppam, located in the South Indian city of Chennai. Palayam Anna, as he is fondly known, has been recording data on wind, weather, Ocean currents and conditions daily, since September 2018, from his home near the mouth of the Adyar river. “Science of the Seas” is a project he has created together with writer/researcher Nityanand Jayaraman, to record, analyse and transmit their learnings. What the data suggests, among other things, is how the seasons and climactic conditions of the sea are changing due to the impact of unregulated human activity. Seaspeaker celebrates not only Palayam Anna’s knowledge creation but also his prowess as a storyteller. Mingled with a generational understanding of the seas are Palayam Anna’s own experiences of what it means to live as a fisher, which he shares through richly detailed stories. The film features one such tale from Palayam Anna’s youth, when he sailed the seas to catch Kola fish (flying fish). The narrative is brought to life by Kalaimamani Muthuchandran Rao, a sixth-generation shadow puppeteer from Tamil Nadu, and his team, using puppets specially created for Seaspeaker. AWARDS:

Following on the trail of the multiple award-winner The Panharmonion Chronicles music video, this short satirical fiction film + music video has an even bigger message. “In 2044, Earth has been polluted to such an extent that humanity subsists on a diet of ‘Manna-Moolah’, a white, tasteless substance made with minerals mined on asteroid MSG100 by the omnipotent RON corporation. Its former chief chemist, Professor Markus Pokus developed Manna-Moolah with the hope of saving humanity from starvation. Instead, Ai took over and altered the chemistry so that it now renders humans numb and docile. To ensure total dominance on society, The RON corporation has wiped all culinary knowledge from the internet and destroyed all cookery books. Against it, Victor Kenstein, Professor Pokus’ former pupil, has been leading the Camden Underground, a resistance group charged with collecting seeds and food recipes to save onboard “the Ark”, a spaceship disguised as a restaurant, concealed inside a hotel built in the heart of Kings Cross. The time has come for the Ark to fulfil its true purpose and save humanity remaining culinary knowledge, as the wanton resource extraction from MSG100 has been so efficient that the asteroid has lost its centre of gravity and is now hurtling towards Earth. With 5 hours before the asteroid impact, Victor has tracked down his former mentor in a desperate bid to get him onboard and leave Earth before it’s too late.”
