Zane was exposed by his friend, about his inability to play chess. Not thinking much of it, he goes on with his life. That is until he is reminded of chess when getting a book for college. His favorite bookstore had all of a sudden bought a fancy chess set. At a coffee shop later that day, he tries to find a chess coach to learn about the game. The only coach he is able to find is highly suspicious and free of charge. After meeting up with the mysterious coach, he learns about the pieces and how they move. When the coach starts the first lesson, they are both sucked into a world of chess. After Zane nearly died in that world of chess, it is revealed that the coach beat Zane with the Scholar's Mate. Zane is then seen beating his friend, the one who originally exposed Zane, with the same Scholar's Mate.
