Some Friends

Some Friends

1973 • 5 min • United Kingdom
Roger Hammond’s silent portraits of film artists from the early 1970s were shot in and around David Larcher’s studio. Some Friends begins with a Polaroid photograph of fellow Co-op filmmaker Mike Dunford held before the camera by the filmmaker as he pans the camera upwards with his other hand. The photograph is held roughly in the centre of the frame, and the general situation in which it is filmed is just seen at the sides of the photograph as the camera pans. The same action is repeated with several photographs, against different backdrops (the river banks, a lawn, a domestic interior).

A filmic homage to the German mime Helfrid Foron, a student of Etienne Decroux who worked with acrobats and tight-rope walkers. He frequently collaborated with contemporary musicians, among them Mauricio Kagel. My intention was to displace his gestures using a form of filmic doubling employing the technique of creating bispecular-asynchronous loops which mime—with extreme visual results—the actions and the objects on stage to make them stand out and to distance them from the action.

Scratch

Scratch

1973 • 20 min
Scratch begins as a standard 8 film fragment, originally filmed in our 60’s basement kitchen, and reprojected as a loop 5 times with a repeated coda of junk and glitch footage, onto a ground glass screen, refilmed in black and white on 16mm film stock. This sequence then begins a series of repetitions that run through negative image, reversed image, solarized, solarized and double exposed, colourized, and finally solarised and reversed with a colour sequence for each process. The central colour section repeats and starts to reverse the procedure through the sequences to the first iteration. At this point a scratch appears, a rich white line that appears momentarily on the image...
Celebrated Royal Fireworks

Celebrated Royal Fireworks

1973 • 12 min • United States of America
This film celebrates the frenzy of light and color found amid exploding fireworks and the speeding headlights of cars on a nighttime road. In the first half of the film, it appears that JoAnn Elam experiments with projecting film of fireworks and filming it again off the screen, superimposing the explosions. At different parts, the projection zooms in and out, adding pulsating boxes to the other forms and colors illuminating the dark. In the second half, headlights join the fray, and the film builds to chaos before slowing down to capture the streaking lights at the very end.
Chocolate Cake

Chocolate Cake

1973 • 4 min • United States of America
The film was made in response to an evening during which a number of male members of Chicago's experimental film scene gathered at JoAnn's house and proceeded to ignore both her and the chocolate cake she made for the occasion. The film consists of a series of shots documenting the making of a chocolate cake, followed by a shot of JoAnn's sandaled foot stepping in the middle of the cake. When JoAnn screened the film in homes or loft spaces in Chicago, she would always serve chocolate cake as an accompaniment. Date of production unknown (likely 1973).

‘A fixed shot of a courtyard whose immense outer chimney stands out against the sky. A landscape that Lowell Bodger films image by image at different times of the day, highlighting differences of light and the play of shadows. Different treatments (solarization, filtering and superimposition) are some of the ‘variations’ of the initial fixed shot.’ C. Brunel

Lovetape Film

Lovetape Film

1973 • 8 min
"The film may suggest the fear of losing a loved one. Desire. Yearning. Anger. Doubt. A female nude. A reiterated breast. A child with a bicycle. The dead stump of a great tree. A blood- red sundown sky. A stick washed back and forth by the sea. And also, near the ending, an old 'Rhythm and Blues' song in which the male voice sings of his fear that he may lose his beloved. He finally closes with 'I wonder …if we’ll ever be…married…..I sometimes wonder…if you still love me?…. or if you’ve let me go?'. I use multiples of several shots. Perhaps it gives a feeling that life is both always the same and yet never the same? I superimpose different material over those shots each time, so that the actual imagery and their impact are always different. It challenges, perhaps, the well known French observation that 'Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose'." –Abbott Meader
