As in the classic fable, the grasshopper plays his fiddle and lives for the moment, while the industrious ants squirrel away massive amounts of food for the winter. With his song, he's able to convince at least one small ant until the queen arrives and scares him back to work. The queen warns the grasshopper of the trouble he'll be in the coming winter. Winter comes, and the grasshopper, near starvation, stumbles across the ants, who are having a full-on feast in their snug little tree. They took him in and warmed him up. The queen tells him only those who work can eat so he must play for them.

Tex Avery worked on this one, credited as an 'artist' and it must have annoyed him, because while the construction of this cartoon and the gags are good, the timing is slow and, at times, awful -- and Tex, as we know, was always anxious to get on to the next gag. We've only got a few minutes folks. Instead, we are caught up in the relatively meaningless plot, as Pete tries to kidnap Oswald's girlfriend and he has to rescue her. From the carnival by the sea. That's enough basic ideas for Tex to have constructed four cartoons and have enough gags left over to leave for Michael Lah.Oswald has been in some pretty good cartoons, but this, alas, is not one of them.

Nearly everyone he encounters sings along: the hippo who can't fit into the car, the girl-fox who can, and the hobos on the side of the tracks. Even the characters on the billboards come to life and sing. Foxy's job is not without troubles. His first difficulty is the cow who blocks his way and refuses to move. Later, he's in more serious trouble when he loses control of the car, sending him and the girl-fox careening down the tracks at top speed.
