A heart-broken alien dreamer from the moon transitions into adult life in Los Angeles like any other 20-something.

Mr. Jans, the idea man at Globe Broadcasting Company, is about to lose his job because he's come up with no ideas. He proposes a broadcast from Dutch New Guinea, a land that hasn't changed in 10,000 years. His boss, Maxwell, approves the idea and sends Jans and Whalen, agreeing to pay Jans $5000 if the show succeeds. Once in New Guinea, the two radio men must audition the local talent then do the show. Singers, dancers, and a band perform. Meanwhile, Whalen can't remember why he tied a string around one of his fingers. What does he need to remember?

Tom and Jerry are hoboes, but the city is demolishing the hobo camp. They hop a ride on a freight train. The train comes to a lumber camp, where the Chinese cook has just prepared a huge platter of roast chicken; he invites the train people to eat, but hundreds of bums descend. He chases them off, into a log slide, and they end up right back in the original camp.

Tom and Jerry are solving a jigsaw puzzle when the stork, frustrated by all the quarantine and "not welcome" signs, leaves a foundling on their doorstep. The tot proves to be more than a handful for them; eventually, he ends up in a closet with a giant vacuum cleaner which causes mayhem. The stork shows up and, disgusted with the job Tom and Jerry have done, decks them and flies off with the baby.

To music - and sometimes the song "One Step Ahead of My Shadow" - we see various scenes of a China imagined by 1930's U.S. stereotyping. We're in what may be Shanghai, with rickshaws and other cultural touchstones. A young man steers his small boat down a river to visit his sweetheart, to whom he sings. A large man, who's well-to-do, seems to cheat his rickshaw driver who takes him to the same house where the kids are courting. A dragon interrupts the fun, the damsel is in distress, and fireworks may follow.

It's bedtime but one of the three boys won't go to sleep, in turn waking up the other two. So Papa has to tell them some bedtime stories. Each of the stories from that of Paul Revere, to the girl with the fan, to the woman who lived in a shoe, which take comic and physical turns, don't seem to do the trick. Papa really wants to get the boys to sleep during the course of the stories as he has his own thoughts of "after sleep" shenanigans with one of the story characters, the Good Fairy. Mirroring Papa, the boys may have their own thoughts besides sleep even after Papa believes they've finally fallen asleep.

Ogg, the supreme dictatorial leader of Mars, holds a special rally to celebrate the exploits of Mars' first space explorer Colonel Cosmic, who has just returned from a trip to Earth. That trip was initiated by Ogg to overcome the problems of Ogg's own explosive-powered state limousine, by finding out how state limousines on other plants operated. By chance, Cosmic landed in big city USA, where he found that all Americans could move quickly and efficiently by gasoline powered automobiles. Despite the difficulty of finding and getting the raw resource of petroleum out of the ground, petroleum and distributing it to the masses is the panacea for many of the problems that Americans may have faced otherwise, not only as that efficient fuel source, but also for the manufacture of many other transportation and non-transportation related products. Cosmic also found another important component - competition - in making America the most most prosperous nation on Earth, which, if adopted on Mars, could overthrow Ogg's dictatorship.

Housewife Alice McDoakes wants to return to work to add income to the household. Her husband, Joe McDoakes, would rather she stay at home to tend to her domestic duties. When Alice threatens to return to her old job as bus driver, which would be the worst situation in Joe's mind, a reluctant Joe agrees to her request to get her a job at his office. He makes a deal with his boss, Mr. Batten, to give her the worst jobs in the office so that she'll want to quit and go back to being a housewife. But given tedious job after impossible job, Alice manages to come through with flying colors time after time. Although Mr. Batten agrees with Joe that a woman's place is in the home, can he argue with success? Joe figures he only has one choice in solving the matter to his desired end goal.
