This film tells how and where Almeda Riddle began her 10 year stint of singing old ballads all over the country. In an informal manner, folk musician Starr Mitchell chats with Riddle about her singing tours and her commitment to preserving the past for the future. The video was filmed two years before Almeda's death in 1986. The church she attended throughout her life used unaccompanied singing and this practice reinforced her use of traditional unaccompanied style as a ballad singer. Almeda was "discovered" by John Quincy Wolfe, a professor at Arkansas (now Lyon) College who brought her to the attention of Alan Lomax, John Lomax's son. Alan had, by this time, taken up the work his father had begun and was the best known collector of American traditional music. Usually called Granny Riddle, Almeda traveled to such places as Harvard and the Newport Folk Festival to sing, and she left behind an extensive body of recorded traditional songs.

African American actors in period costumes and vintage cars re-enact a variant of the Grimms' comic story, "The Master Thief," in a small 1930s American town. Jack, a poor laborer's son, wants to marry the dentist's daughter, but the dentist insists that he earn money first. When clever jack steals the money from thugs Robin Hood-fashion, the dentist devises more premarital hurdles. Jack even kidnaps the preacher and steals the sheets off the dentist's bed -- while he's sleeping in it. A fine example of an American Jack Tale, closely related to traditional trickster tales found worldwide.

Having received her training at the Royal Academy of Physical Education in Stockholm, Lissa Bengston now teaches swimming in California. She teaches children as young as three and four in a step by step method. The first step in to get the children comfortable with the overhead arm motions of the crawl, she holding their legs so as not to thrash them around. In the process, the children learn the natural breathing rhythms associated with being under the water. The next step has the children learning to kick with their legs, holding their hands in a stationery position above their heads. This step is to demonstrate that the arms alone and the legs alone are enough to propel them and keep them afloat in the water. This teaching method makes the children feel at home in the water, and not to be afraid of it. A key to Lissa's method is to ensure the children are having fun, which is obvious by their eagerness to get back into the water time after time.
