The Sleight of the Machine, crafts an evocative meditation on illusion, technology, and the shifting nature of perception. Blurring the line between traditional sleight-of-hand and computational trickery, this AI-generated short film transforms the simple gestures of magic into an eerie allegory for our algorithmically mediated reality. Both mesmerizing and disquieting, the film distills the existential tension of our time—the seduction of technology, the erosion of truth, and the uncanny beauty of a world where reality is no longer a fixed construct, but a performance. A young, unassuming girl goes on a murderous rampage to try and 'purify' the technologically advanced modern society. She is calculated and rational: every step she takes is thought about ten times before it's taken. Little gives her hope in such a despicably preoccupied world except for the one person who has managed to earn her trust. When he betrays her in a familiar way, she must take drastic measures. Symbolic and provoking, '8.3' is an important social commentary on what our society has become and how to deal with it.

An excellent mixture of animation and real film from Rocket Films in 1984, directed by Phil Thrumbo and Steve Segal (which also plays the role of Mutchu, one of Lord Eggheads evil helpers). Segal also programmed the special effects in the endpart (using Commodore 64). The heroes of futuropolis are Captain Garth, Spud, Liutenant Luna and Cosmo. These four space cadets are sent to investigate series of mutations and destructions of peaceful worlds. The brain behind this chaos is Lord Egghead, the inventor of the "mutation ray". Futuropolis is an excellent movie which contains a lot of great animated effects!

The inner voice of a young beekeeper shares his thoughts with us during a day of work. The initial starting point of the narrative voice is a question - addressed by the mother to the protagonist -: "when will I become a grandmother?". From here, a stream of consciousness unfolds that tends to unite the real mother with mother nature, the society of bees with the human one and procreation with overpopulation, for a consequent analysis - free from moral judgments - of the differences: natural mothers expect answers, mother nature offers answers to those who have the sensitivity to capture them; the society of bees is a fixed model where everyone has a role, the human one gives up pre-established roles in the name of freedom but this often causes collective disorientation; having children means increasing the number of the population, in a context of increasingly difficult management, where some countries are emptying and others are filling. Here the young man's reflection intersects with what he knows happens in the hive, here, when the specimens increase, the queen bee flies away together with a part of the group, to prevent the excess number from threatening the integrity of the system. But what if this were not possible? The cells would become cages. Is having children, today, in a world where the adjective "intensive" is coupled with more and more terms - agriculture, breeding, construction, therapies - an ecological choice? The intensification of agriculture and the use o

When the Snow Falls

When the Snow Falls

1970 • 20 min • United Kingdom
👁️ 89
When the Snow Falls is a neo-noir experimental drama short film. The narrative centres around, the protagonist, Walter’s drug addiction, which leads to his ultimate isolation and demise. Filmed in black and white and using minimal dialogue, this film aims to blend a modern story with traditional elements that give way to contemporary experimentation. Walter’s unusual disposition and vacant staring, paired with various cinematic choices, create an uncomfortable portrayal of drug cravings and the psychological strain that they can take on an individual. This behaviour leads to Walter’s wife, Elsie, observing his addiction and leaving him. In the aftermath of her absence, Walter gives in to the addiction, which sends him on an ever-continuous downward spiral of his own creation. Walter is forced to ask Elsie for help where she finds evidence of his binges and affairs. After being kicked out of his home, he finds himself alone and homeless. The negative depiction of drug addiction is paired with abstract and - at times - surreal looks into Walter’s perspective. AWARDS:
