Staring At The Light is a love letter to our Wonder Valley Desert home. The landscape of this special place calms our minds, stills our hearts and blows us wide open to the scene. The winds, the dance of the sand whirling like a dervish and blowing like rain, the sudden torrential and always surprising downpours transforming the dry parched ground to temporary oasis, the all-embracing and unbearable heat of summer and those sweet cool nights nights of fall and spring, the music making with creative fellow desert friends, the unexpected treasures and hidden life of this place all inform what you are about to see.

Ada Kaleh

Ada Kaleh

Romania, 1970. In the heart of the Danube, the paradise island of Ada Kaleh yields to the brutality of the Communist regime, ruled with an iron fist by Nicolae Ceaușescu. A magical little enclave, a European Atlantis inhabited since Antiquity, the island is then home to an endemic population of Ottoman culture. In order to build the most powerful hydraulic dam in Europe (the Iron Gates), the crowning image of his power, the dictator orchestrates the deportation of its occupants and the total destruction of the island. A symbol of unique beauty sacrificed on the altar of an autocratic regime, Ada Kaleh now lies under thirty metres of water, its ghosts haunting the river. A modest little square window in the center of the black screen lets out fragile, trembling archive images captured on the day of Ada Kaleh's destruction. The film broadcasts shot-by-shot visual fragments pulsating in the dark. We see small houses, stores, a tree... blown up. A young woman and her double are murdered in a lush natural setting on the banks of the Danube, at two different moments in history experienced simultaneously. This sacrifice-like event triggers visions that seem to emerge from a buried double-memory, sucking us into an apnea journey, to the sunken territory of the island. The entire film seems to contract, pulsating in the grip of an obscured memory shaking its surface.

Was very fond of Woody Woodpecker and his cartoons as a child. Still get much enjoyment out of them now as a young adult, even if there are more interesting in personality cartoon characters and better overall cartoons. That is in no way knocking Woody, because many of his cartoons are a lot of fun to watch and more and also still like him a lot as a character. Here in 'Jittery Jester' he is not as toned down as he tended to be in his later cartoons and around this period and is a manic pest and very funny while never obnoxious (except to Dooley). Dooley is an amusing foil and one where one roots for Woody and not him. The King is suitably jovial and one that means business, and the horse, with a couple of the best moments like his response to being socked in the jaw, very nearly steals the cartoon. Some of the action is a little typical, but where 'Jittery Jester' fares least, as with most Woody Woodpecker cartoons from this period, is in the animation. Time and budget constraints shows in some of the animation, which is a little rushed looking in the drawing and detail wise it's on the simplistic and careless side like many of Woody's cartoons from this period continuing through to the 60s. Some of the action is very predictable and typical Woody Woodpecker. On the other hand, the music however is bouncy, energetic and very lushly orchestrated, not only synchronising and fitting with the action very well but enhancing it. The whole cartoon goes at a lively pace, especially in
